We collect the tasty, meaty bits that would otherwise go to waste while processing meat for human consumption and upcycle them into nutritious, meaty dog rolls.

Yes, they are. They are handled as a ‘chilled product’ from the store to the factory. Once at the factory, the ingredients are gently cooked in a process that pasteurises the dog food, killing any potential pathogens while retaining the natural nutrient content of the ingredients.

>

Yes. This dog roll is a 100% complete and balanced diet for your dog. It is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages of a dog.

Dog roll is a nutrient dense food for your dog that contains rich levels of fresh animal sourced protein, vitamins, minerals, fresh vegetables, and healthy fats to deliver your dog a nutritious, complete and balanced diet.

We define nutrient dense foods as foods that supply generous amounts of one or more nutrients compared to the number of calories in the food.

Meat proteins from both the deli and the butchery department are collected. The food leftovers that can go into the collection bin are meat, fat, bones, deli meats, sausages and any vegetables that are mixed with the meat.

No meat protein that has ‘gone off’ is used.

Each roll has a minimum of 20% upcycled meat, with a maximum use 35.5% ‘upcycled’ meat content in the rolls, with the variation of content due to supply fluctuations.

‘Upcycling’ is a way to reduce food waste and thereby help the environment, by creating high quality, nutritious food products from food ingredients that would otherwise not be consumed, and would in most cases, go to waste.

By using ‘left over’ and unwanted ingredients to produce new nutritious foods, we are helping to reduce food waste, reduce greenhouse gases and have a positive impact on the environment.

As a dog owner, upcycled food is a nutritious and transparent way for you to help the planet.

Up to 40% of food is wasted globally, and that is a big problem for both our society and for our planet.  Upcycled food helps to reduce this problem by creating new, high quality food products from otherwise wasted – but perfectly nutritious ingredients.

The Upcycled Food Association (UFA) is a non-profit organisation focused on reducing food waste by growing the upcycled food economy. It was created in 2019 by upcycled food companies themselves, who recognised the power of collaboration in growing a successful upcycled food as a new category and environmental movement. UFA is comprised of Members and Associate Members from around the world. Foodstuffs New Zealand participate in working groups facilitated by the UFA.

‘Globally, 60% of people want to buy more upcycled food products, and that is because 95% of us want to do our part to reduce food waste’*.

In short, ‘upcycling’ is a way to reduce food waste and thereby help the environment, by creating high quality, nutritious food products from food ingredients that would otherwise not be consumed, and would in most cases, go to waste.

By using ‘left over’ and unwanted ingredients to produce new nutritious foods we are helping to reduce food waste and have a positive impact on the environment.

Upcycling is one way to reduce food waste and help the environment.  ‘Upcycled food businesses are preventing millions of tonnes of food waste each year, equivalent to millions of pounds of CO2 emissions prevented, and millions of gallons of water saved’.

Medallion Pet foods, the manufacturers of PERFECT Deli Fresh dog roll are working with the Foodstuffs’ Sustainability team.  This project forms a part of the Foodstuffs national Waste Minimisation and Recycling Programme.

https://www.foodstuffs.co.nz/corporate-responsibility/environment/waste-minimisation-and-recycling/

The Foodstuffs Waste Minimisation Programme for supermarkets encourages stores to focus on recycling and reusing waste from back of store, with landfill being a last resort.  The protein waste stream is just one of the waste streams for recycling or reuse under this programme. PERFECT Deli Fresh dog roll uses food waste that is no longer fit for human consumption, which is still safe to reprocess for pets
